Think Safety When Outdoors this Summer

Keep you, your children and family members safe, secure and well this summer by remembering the following outdoor electrical safety tips:

·         Look up and around you. Always be aware of the location of power lines, particularly when using long metal tools like ladders, pool skimmers and pruning poles, or when installing rooftop antennas and satellite dishes or doing roof repair work.

·         Remember: Electricity + Water = DANGER. If it’s raining or the ground is wet, avoid using electric yard tools. Never step into a flooded area – especially basements – if water is in contact with electrical outlets, appliances or cords. Energy flows easily through water, like a puddle or pool.

·         Never climb trees near power lines. Tree limbs can conduct electricity because they contain water. Electricity can pass through a branch that is touching a line, thus shocking the victim. Kids should be warned not to climb trees or build tree houses in trees with lines nearby.

·         Never go into an electric substation for any reason. Electric substations contain high-voltage equipment, which can kill you.
